Specialized therapy for a highly complex body region

The hand is a highly complex part of the body with a wide range of requirements. In addition to heavy work, hands should also be able to perform the most delicate movements and have a high level of sensitivity. They are also of great aesthetic importance and therefore an important part of our personality. However, the age of the patient with the changed requirement profile must also be taken into account. The growing hand of a child and the hand of an older person pose different challenges for the doctor.

Most accidental injuries affect the hand. However, degenerative changes and connective tissue diseases also frequently manifest themselves in the fingers or carpus. Special hand surgery exists due to the complex anatomy and the differentiated therapy required.

Certified hand surgeons have at least three years of specialized training in designated specialist departments, followed by an examination after completing specialist training.

A differentiated assessment of the therapy can thus be made after comprehensive diagnostics, knowledge of all treatment options and involvement of the patient and their specific needs.

First-class care also includes a large number of special implants and instruments. Surgical microscopes and micro instruments are used. Some of the suture material used is thinner than a human hair. Screws and plates for fracture treatment are also miniature.

The Hand Surgery Section has existed at the Inn Clinic Altötting and Mühldorf since 2005 under the direction of Dr. Thomas Urbanke.

Thanks to its close cooperation with the district clinics, the hand surgery department is able to provide seamless care for hand surgery patients.

In addition to treating injuries of all degrees of severity up to the replantation of severed limbs, degenerative diseases of the hand and injuries and diseases of the peripheral nerves are treated.

The close proximity to other medical specialties available at the clinic—such as orthopedics and rheumatology—enables a holistic treatment approach “all under one roof.”

Most treatments and surgeries can be performed on an outpatient basis. The Outpatient Surgical Center at the Burghausen Clinic is used for this purpose.
